Discipline. Restraint. Self-control. Necessary is this to ensuring guaranteed increase.
For everyone desirous of a change in the status quo, there are certain things expected to be one. An obese person passionately wanting a fitter body size will always go through strict routines. If these routines are followed, the obese person within a defined period takes a different and fitter shape.
So, it is with us. If Christianity involves entering into what Jesus is, then there are weights we must not take in with us. There are attributes which must stick with us. There are characters/ traits which must not take dominion over us.
As someone said, discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments. So is discipline the bridge between desire and the actual supernatural increase. Just as his parents departed Jerusalem after the yearly feast of the Passover, Jesus stayed behind. It takes discipline to forgo pleasure and pursue the utmost. This Jesus did. Hear his response: “How is it that ye sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business.” (Luke 2:49).
It is discipline which made Jesus rise in the morning (Mark 1:35), defy sleep (Luke 6:12), take strategic positions (Luke 9:28-29) to pray.
Apostle Paul typified discipline in his walk as well. Hear him: “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before.” Philippians 3:13.
It takes discipline to put away attainments of the past, successes of the past, glories of the past. It takes one with determination to put away the hours of vigils kept praying on the mount in the past, completion of the bible three times before the end of the year and every other attainment of the past.
It takes discipline to wake up when others are fast sleeping to pray, study the scriptures and engage in spiritual exercises for increase. When roommates are engaged in the worldly affairs and still making it, discipline says stay on the right path.
Discipline says spend time with the Father early in the morning while your phone notifies for a new WhatsApp message. Discipline says you leave the comfort of your bed to ray to avoid sleep while the mind says sleep a while. Self-control ensures your body-God’s temple is kept pure not minding the ‘pleasure’ obtainable.
I pray God help our hearts!
The first of its kind! It’s the Alumni Sunday.
Thank God for those who blazed the trail, kept the torch and passed the baton.
Even as we worship God today, it is my prayer this will not be the end. We will be among the host of those who will worship God forever in heaven.
Happy Alumni Sunday
