Before the race begins…

If you haven’t known, know it now. If it hasn’t been revealed, behold the revelation.
University of Lagos is set to begin a new session by Monday, March 3, 2014.

Surprised? Don’t be. Scared? Never be. Anxious?? Why should you? It is not important.

Before the race begins, you have to take a review of past period as students. How far have you fared?

The king suffered insomnia. Sleep vanished and he commanded the book of records be opened.

Never start this new session without probings and deep evaluation of past sessions of how you’ve fared.

Congratulations, now you an FYB. That signifies you have 9 months left before the university releases you. Have you prayerfully thought out a strategy for survival in this ‘no job opportunity’ environment? What are your plans after school. If you have shyed away from this? Don’t shy away from it now. The time to plan is NOW.

Oh! Dear student, you have completed your sophomore class. It signifies about 50 per cent work done. It is the final lap to the finish line. Avoid no slack. Seek HIM now while he might be found to divinely order your steps.

Oh! Freshman. Congratulations. Out of the lot, you were selected. The new session isn’t High School. A different scenry. Indeed, you can’t afford to embark on this journey with GOD.

Never venture into leaving out God unless you plan to be ruined before your programmes culminates.

Indeed, schooling is not a gurantee of success. It is a useful tool for a positive outlook towards living.

In Christ alone should your hope be found.

Some may put theirs in chariots, amassing of grades while others on people but surely it wouldn’t succeed.

Therefore, trust in the LORD with all thy strength. Lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge HIM and HE shall direct your path!

A generation of an IRRESISTIBLE Influence? Can we have such a generation of people? Oh! YES!!! A group of people whose mien, actions and decisions are indeed influential to others around them. Not just influential but irresistible.

A set of personalities whose spirit-filled lives become the mirror which others in the world jostle to utilise and mark as yardstick. Lives that will be change agents. Indeed propellers of innovative ideas and progress. Persons that will stand tall above corruption, average-minded thought process, pessimists and believers in mediocrity.

In this world of perverseness, sorcery, nudity, inflamed passion for media buzz and social networking, the youthful generation is indeed being caught by the bug. Many a lives are pining away. A generation budding is that which spend eternity on social networks just uploading pictures of ‘achievements’ they term ‘landmarks’. Asides being emergency photo men, they vigorously keep tabs on the ephemeral things in order to imitate sheepishly-with no cause for deep thinking and probing. Rather than face their books, they prefer to face book filling the vacuum meant for positive knowledge.

In this world of technology crazy abound persons who will leave no rock upturned to ensure one unit of a BlackBerry Q10 is nicely curled by their thumb and index fingers-pinging all day, non-stop. The unending quest to acquire the latest of gadgets. Mind you, all these are not bad but the crass way of acquiring it.

A generation where nudity is celebrated without trepidation. Preciously made bodies meant to be covered hopelessly stare you in the face seeking attention and other ulterior motives of the ‘displayer’. One and all want to be the carbon copy of TV Hip-Hop stars. No recourse to moderation. Indeed, these are not the best times for parents raising children. No matter how hard they try to prevent these from influencing their children, it is still not a success story.

ALAS! There abound a generation. Yes an army of persons who are ready to be agents of change. A conglomeration of irresistible influence personalities are budding. Those who are ready to lay their lives for the enthronement of God’s kingdom . Those ready never to be shoved aside.

INDEED, a generation of God’s own sons whose mandate is solely to recruit many to God’s kingdom. Are you one of them?

Daniel of the bible did exploit because he was indeed sure of the God he serves. He never chickened out in
the face of persecution. To be irresistible doesn’t come to us rather we enter into such realm. A realm which makes decisions to be taken without your verdict being sought. He was academically sound and spiritually vibrant. He was truly irresistible. He stood out among peers.

Irresistible Influence channels do not influence sitting comfortably on the lower rungs of the class. Rather, they are those whose academics and success story are propellers to others for imitation.

Joseph was tagged a dreamer by his family. So will people tag your project #IrresistibleInfluence. However he became one whose God-given intelligence helped solve problems. He was indeed an irresistible gemstone. Who knows, you might be the one who Nigerians are waiting for to provide a solution to the lingering power crisis and leadership ineptitude. Or the world is waiting to completely change their focus on technology to ‘techGOD’.

What of David? The man after God’s own heart. He indeed affected his generation positively. From being a flock tender to God’s people tender. He was a leader whose influence can never be undermined.
Dear reader, congratulations for scanning through to this point. This world indeed needs those who will change her value system, infuse Godly living and positive minded opinion leaders. Are you such?
Are you ready to step into the shoes of great men of God who influenced their generation or just another passer by?

WE ARE THE CHOSEN GENERATION whose light must continually beam for the world to emulate. Our seasoning power as salt of the earth mustn’t be lost.

Rather we should continually let our lights shine brighter and brighter that others will see.

Be the change you hope to see. If you indeed desire to be irresistible in your generation, do the irresistible-total surrender to God’s will.

Critics and Criticism

To always give a defense for every criticism against you is rather a sign of weakness than a strong point. And such infirmity leads to so much irritation of concerned fellows that they stop airing their opinions on your conduct. Now when the mirror is gone, the hope for perfection of beauty goes dim.

Criticism is rather a statement of opinion, and its congruence to truth remains probable, to be rightly judged only by a pure, defenseless heart. And why answer back when the criticism against you is not a question? Yea, even if found in form of a question, it is often rhetorical, needing no answer.

In mathematics, an identity element is defined as an element which has no effect on combination with any of the sides of an equation. So are excuses to failure; they neither undo the decisions and deeds that led to the disappointment, nor alter the damage already caused.

Haven’t we often been misled by the pride of our depraved hearts to think ourselves righteous amidst obvious evidences of our errors? Thomas a Kempis rightly remarks, “Often we are not aware that we are so blind in heart. Meanwhile we do wrong, and then do worse in excusing it.” And little wonder the sweet Psalmist of Israel cried out in prayers,

“Who can understand [his] errors? cleanse thou me from secret [faults]. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous [sins]; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression.”

(Ps. 19:12-13)

A man of a thousand words is too noisy and boring to be heard; yea, a man of ten thousand excuses is even too irresponsible and too weak to succeed. He who absolves himself of all blame stands in judgment of all; yea, he puts himself in greater danger who thinks himself to be entirely safe from all harm.

We should be more willing to allow men have their say while we examine ourselves to amend our ways on course to perfection. If we are right in our thinking, we should soon realize that open condemnation does not demean us; neither does public commendation make us better than who we really are.

Of this Christ Himself proclaimed,

“Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you!”
(Luke 6:26)

And elsewhere, He blesses the unjustly criticized, saying,

“Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”
(Matt. 5:10)

The man who accepts criticism dissolves all erroneous conclusions by the inner strength which he possesses, namely, the wisdom of his heart. And he who gratefully receives them with the calm of meekness soon realizes some great opportunities to develop and release more strength.

Are you being unjustly criticized? I offer you the words said to me by Professor Michael Kolawole, a lecturer of mine who I admire: “Learn to cultivate a culture; you will excel in it and be contented. But don’t expect all people to admire you. A large number, out of envy, will attempt to blackmail you. Don’t mind. Though annoying, but keep moving.”

If your actions are just and true, they cannot be tainted or dimmed by vain arguments, for darkness leaves no spot on the candle stick; yea, as light shines brighter in darkness, so shall your righteousness break forth in glorious radiance amidst the erroneous judgments laid up against you.

Peter sets this forth with resounding authority of justice when he wrote:

“Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation”
(1Pet. 2:12)

Many a time, silence is the best defense for criticism. It provides a better platform for sober reflection and relaxes the muscles of the mind from a thousand struggles against truth to be occasioned by one’s ego.

The highest example of this is seen in the attitude of the Messiah, of whom it was written,

“He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth”
(Isa. 53:7)

Such Peter recommends as being altogether worthy of our emulation:
“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed [himself] to him that judgeth righteously”.

(1Pet. 2:21-23)
So also we who are criticized unjustly should not fall to the deception of answering back, for such speaks more of the arrogance of folly than the meekness of wisdom; rather, we should maintain righteous silence, do away with unnecessary excuses and reserve our just answers, if any, for the day of ultimate reckoning, while we diligently consider our ways and rest our hope in our blessed Saviour and Lord whom we strive to please with our every deeds in life or death.

As I conclude this piece written with intent to enlighten the heart of my fellow companions in the heavenly race, I must here admit that such was borne out of firsthand experience, not just diligent study of words or stories of another, neither by intelligent composition of amiable lyrics. I have indeed been chastised by my faults and corrected by the divine light of Scriptural truth. You may now borrow a lesson from mine to tread more wisely on the narrow pathways of earthly life. For “an ounce of wisdom”, the Chinese say, “is worth a bushel of learning”.

“Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfills the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.” Winston Churchill

This is a question many of us need to sit and think about before answering. For many ‘Christians’, they not just ‘date’ the devil, they have a thriving relationship with him. Know this: It is impossible to serve God and mammon. Friendship with the world is enmity with God (James 4:4) and God won’t have 99.9% of your heart (EX. 34:14).

You say you’re a Christian and you still cheat and carry out exam malpractice? You’re flirting with the devil. There is a very high tendency for people in a relationship to pick up habits and attitudes from each other. Hence, the saying ‘Show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are’. Even the Bible note ‘Evil communication corrupts good manners’ (I Cor. 15:3).

Some will ask “what’s so wrong in helping out in the exam hall?” I’ll tell you- better still, the Bible tells us what is wrong:

–          ‘Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is n authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves’– Rom 13:1-2

–          ‘If ye love me, keep my commandments’- Jn. 14:15

Referring to the first passage, our authority can be seen as the school authorities. We are aware of rules and regulations guiding our exams, but for one reason or other, we flout them.

Referring to the second scripture, if truly you love the Lord; if Christ is the only one who has your heart, you should be making conscious efforts to obey Him. I know it’s not cool, I know it can sometimes seem stupid but you must realize that you have to take a stand. Stop the Double-Dating, have faith in Him alone and you’ll see that God is a faithful lover.

“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that he exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him” Heb 11:6

Do not be deceive yourself. Give reasonable attendance to studying. God is a GP booster, not a magician.

“Be not deceived. God is not mocked. For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” Gal. 6:7.

“Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men” Prov. 22:29

Why give your heart to a double standard? A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. Surrender all to the master craft. He is willing to mould, break, crush and refine us.

I see no reason a student should fall in love when he or she is not ripe for marriage. When there is the possibility of ‘flowing’ in love.

This (love), the greatest of all gift comes naturally from individuals that are beneficiary of it. It helps to lift up the lethargic, lukewarm, inter Alia (amongst others). Have you experienced it? Spread some cheer to the sad and lonely people!

Some say they have experienced it but they don’t express it: “though I speak with tongues of men and angles, ‘lives will still be left in the dungeon of despair,’ though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and knowledge, the fainting and discouraged on life’s road will remain crushed beneath their loads’ without it. The greatest of all communicators expressed and still expressing it.

An anonymous writer wrote: “the greater your capacity to love, the greater your capacity to feel the pain. Pain is temporal, it may last a minute, an hour, a day, a week, month or even a year but it will eventually subside and something else will take its place.

“The pain of love is the pain of being alive. It’s a perpetual, indefinite or lasting wind. It is like Heaven but hurts like hell: it is like War, easy to begin but hard to end: it is like burden which must not be carried alone”

Have you encountered this medium who can help you carry this burden called LOVE and invariably express it for the World to see?

“Out of darkness of sorrow and sin,” a song writer pens down, “many are helpless and wait for your call, somebody needs your love. Someone is tempted to turn from the right longing for courage and strength for the fight, somebody needs your love. Some are downhearted, in sorrow they roam. Sighing for Heaven and Home; somebody needs your love.

“Many are in sadness, yearning for gladness, somebody needs your love.”

We see students in this present dispensation longing and lusting after the painting and pleasure of pneumatic peers so as to gain the love of the world or be accepted and or loved but still carry that hollowness of Divine Love within.

Have you experienced this Divine Love? Express it.

Awake O sinful friend because there is a kind of love that constrains/compels when the goings are good, even when the browsing through life is bad; there is still a free flow of love.

For the love of Christ compels us” 2Cor. 5:14a.

Come to this medium (Christ) and experience true love and express it.

Has your life been transformed to express this love? Someone said that the prison reforms, school informs but Christ (medium) transforms.

If you have been transformed by Him, flow in this love an don’t fall into it and if not, you can come to Christ just as you are, asking Him to take away every iniquity and carnality that can hinder Him from coming into your heart and expressing it(Love) through you.

Believe that He has done it…. Mark 12:30,31; Rev3:20; Rom 10:11

Why fall in love just to get heart broken? His unending LOVE is for us all. It compels us. It constrains us. It is everlasting. FLOW in that love.
